Laminate Installation: What Separates a Good Job

Laminate clicks together without adhesive or nails, which makes it look like the simplest floor there is to install. It is the one we are most often called out to fix.

The product is rarely the problem. Three details are.

The expansion gap

Laminate is a floating floor. It is not fastened to anything — it rests on the subfloor and moves as a single sheet with changes in temperature and humidity.

That means it needs a gap around the entire perimeter, hidden under the skirting or beneath a trim profile. Without it, the floor expands, has nowhere to go, and lifts in the middle of the room or peaks at a seam.

This is the single most common laminate failure and it is entirely preventable. It also has to be maintained at every fixed obstacle — door frames, pipes, kitchen islands — not just the walls.

The Inland Empire's dry air makes shrinkage the more common direction here, but the gap matters just as much, because a house that runs air conditioning all summer and heating in winter is cycling its floor through both.

Underlayment

Underlayment is a small line on a quote and it decides how the floor sounds and feels.

Without it, laminate is hollow and clicky underfoot — the noise people associate with cheap floors, which is usually a fitting decision rather than a product one. It also cushions the floor slightly, which reduces wear at the locking joints.

Some laminate comes with underlayment pre-attached, and that is worth checking rather than assuming, because paying for it twice is wasteful and having none at all is worse.

On a slab, underlayment often doubles as the moisture barrier, which brings us to the third thing.

Slab moisture

Most homes here sit on concrete, and concrete passes moisture vapour upward. The amount varies through the year and it is not something you can judge by looking.

Laminate's core is compressed wood fibre. Vapour arriving from underneath over months will swell it just as effectively as a spill will, and because it happens slowly and invisibly the first sign is usually seams lifting across a whole area.

A moisture reading before installation tells us whether a barrier is needed. This is a five-minute step that prevents the most expensive kind of laminate failure, and it is routinely skipped.

Subfloor flatness

Laminate needs a flat subfloor, and flat is not the same as level. A floor can slope gently across a room and be fine. Local dips and humps are the problem.

Where the floor is uneven, the planks flex at their locking joints every time someone walks across. Those joints are not designed for repeated flexing, and eventually they separate — which shows up as a gap in the middle of a floor that has no reason to be there.

On a slab this usually means grinding high spots and filling low ones before anything goes down.

Direction and layout

Running planks along the longest dimension of a room generally makes it read longer, and running them toward the main light source makes the seams less visible.

Where laminate meets another flooring type, the transition profile has to allow the laminate to keep moving. A transition screwed down through the laminate pins the floor and causes exactly the problem the expansion gap exists to prevent.

What to ask

If you are comparing quotes, ask what underlayment is included, what the moisture plan is for the slab, and what subfloor preparation is allowed for. Those three answers are where the difference between quotes almost always sits.
